Incident: Walaha 01-Oct-2016. An Air Vanuatu de Havilland DHC-6-300 Twin Otter, registration YJ-RV10 performing flight NF-228 from Espiritu Santo to Walaha (Vanuatu) with 19 passengers and one crew, was on short final to Walaha about 20-30 seconds prior to touch down when the elevator control cable fractured and snapped. The pilot was able to maintain control and continued for a safe landing. The airline reported that the pilot noticed an irregularity on the elevator control while on short final about 20-30 seconds prior to touchdown. A subsequent examination of the aircraft revealed the component failure. The fractured elevator control cable, that had been manufactured in New Zealand, was about 6 months old. All aircraft fleetwide were immediately inspected but no further fault was found.
Note: Test flown from Cairns, QLD 12-Jun-2017 following maintenance. The aircraft has been present in Cairns since arriving from Vanuatu on 03-Mar-2017.
